The Intuition

It seems obvious: bright screens hurt your eyes, so you should dim them. Right?

Wrong. At least, it's more complicated than that.

The Hidden Trade-off

When you dim your screen, most displays use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation).1 The backlight doesn't dim smoothly — it rapidly flickers between fully ON and fully OFF.

PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) is an industry-standard technique where the backlight switches on and off hundreds of times per second. The ratio of on-time to off-time determines perceived brightness. Most laptop displays use PWM frequencies between 200-500 Hz. — IEEE Standard 1789-2015

The Math

Flicker Exposure = OFF_time × Hours

At 30% brightness with PWM at 240Hz:

Flicker Calculation
OFF time per cycle 70% × 4.17ms = 2.9ms
Cycles per second 240
OFF time per second 2.9ms × 240 = 700ms
8-hour workday total 5.6 hours of darkness

Your eyes spend more than half the day being rapidly strobe-lit.

The Symptoms

PWM flicker affects approximately 15% of people severely,2 and many more to a lesser degree:

How to Switch

  1. Open System Settings → Displays
  2. Drag brightness slider to 100%
